Bartolotta Applauds Major Clean Energy Announcement for Southwestern PA

HARRISBURG — Senator Camera Bartolotta (R-46) issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Department of Energy’s announcement that CONSOL Energy Inc. would receive a major grant for the development of an advanced, coal-based power plant with net-zero carbon emissions in Canonsburg as part of the Department’s Coal FIRST Initiative:

“This announcement is a game-changer not only for the local economy, but also for Pennsylvania’s energy economy as a whole. For years, our power plants have been working to operate more efficiently with the least environmental impact possible. This funding will help us take the next step in that process by supporting a plant with zero net carbon emissions, achieving the mutual goals of promoting a strong economy and protecting the health of our communities.

“The creation of this plant will have ripple effects on the economy throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. As Chair of the Senate Labor and Industry Committee, I look forward to seeing the new jobs and economic opportunities this project will bring to the community and the region.

“This innovative local project was one of just four selected nationwide in an extremely competitive review process. I am extremely proud of the hard work that went into bringing this project to our region. Pennsylvania has long been a leader in the nation’s energy industry. Today’s announcement proves that we can be a national leader in promoting clean energy as well.”
