Local Schools Receive Grants to Improve Nutrition Options for Students

HARRISBURG – Fourteen schools in the 46th Senatorial District will receive grants totaling more than $52,000 to expand healthy breakfast options for students, according to Senator Camera Bartolotta (R-46).

The grants were awarded through a new program that helps schools create alternative breakfast service methods, such as grab-n-go breakfast, breakfast in the classroom, second chance breakfast and similar programs.

Grant recipients in the 46th Senatorial District include:

  • Aliquippa Junior-Senior High School, Beaver County.
  • Aliquippa Elementary School, Beaver County.
  • Hopewell Elementary School, Beaver County.
  • Independence Elementary School, Beaver County.
  • Margaret Ross Elementary School, Beaver County.
  • Carmichaels Area High School, Greene County.
  • Carmichaels Area Elementary School, Greene County.
  • Avella Elementary Center, Washington County.
  • Bethlehem-Center Senior High School, Washington County.
  • Bethlehem-Center Elementary School, Washington County.
  • Bethlehem-Center Middle School, Washington County.
  • Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School, Washington County.
  • Burgettstown Elementary Center, Washington County.
  • McGuffey Middle School, Washington County.

“Research shows that food insecurity can have an enormous impact on a child’s ability to learn,” Bartolotta said. “These grants will help ensure no child has to begin the school day on an empty stomach so they can reach their full potential.”
