Senate Committee to Discuss Western PA’s Ongoing Economic Recovery from Pandemic

CANONSBURG – To discuss the ongoing economic recovery of western Pennsylvania, the Senate Majority Policy Committee will host a workshop with local employers and legislators about the region’s progress on Wednesday, September 16.

This workshop discussion is being held at the request of Senator Camera Bartolotta (R-Beaver/Greene/Washington).

“The recovery from the Governor’s prolonged and inconsistent shutdown orders will be a long process, and we must keep our eyes and ears open about the challenges facing our communities. We need to maintain a healthy dialogue with business owners and local leaders to make sure that state government is an effective partner in the recovery process,” said Bartolotta, who serves as Chair of the Senate Labor and Industry Committee. “This hearing will help identify the most pressing issues facing our employers and employees today so we can take the next steps to ensure our local communities can eventually come back stronger than ever.”

According to recent reports from the state’s Independent Fiscal Office, Pennsylvania faces a $5 billion shortfall over the next two years. With the unpredictability of the markets and virus, this number has the potential to be higher. 435,000 net payroll jobs in the state are expected to be lost this year and total wages and salaries are expected to drop by 3.2 percent.

“This virus and the Governor’s shutdown have affected almost every aspect of society,” said Majority Policy Chair Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks). “Rather than working with legislators and the local leaders who know their communities, this Governor has opted for one-size-fits-all approaches that simply don’t make sense. We must help our local employers in rural, less-effected areas reopen and operate their businesses under strict CDC recommendations.”

The Senate Majority Policy Committee will conduct the workshop on Wednesday, September 16 at 11 am at Ameri-Precision Metals in Canonsburg, PA.  The public is invited to watch the event on the Senate Majority Policy Committee’s website.
